Hosting has easily become one of my most favorite things to do; especially since moving back to the ‘burbs. I feel so fortunate to have more space to entertain and have friends and family over has been such a joy that I have really, really didn’t realize how much I needed.
Back in the New York City days, I really still enjoyed hosting (it just looked a teensy bit different). There are just challenges with hosting in an apartment that you come to embrace as part of the process.
Did I let that stop me? Absolutely not! And if you are also living in a small space but want to live out your Martha Stewart hosting dreams–definitely don’t let it stop you either!
Believe it or not, these little challenges allowed me to slowly begin to master the art of hosting. I noticed the little things that I wished I could do, but couldn’t; yet I made do! And now, I feel that I have really gotten into a good groove of what it’s like to be the ultimate host. (At least, I think so!)
Now enter the best time to host: springtime!
We recently hosted Easter brunch (as the youngest of eight with two step siblings–all with kids–this is no small feat), which made me think more seriously about the things I consider most when hosting, and I thought I’d share those thought processes with you today in hopes that they help bring a bit of inspo for your next event!
1) Florals
This is a no-brainer. Florals are key to throwing the best party, especially in the springtime! And you don’t have to spend a fortune to get what you want! You can put together the most luxurious floral arrangements on a budget from either your local Trader Joes or farmers market.
To really amp up your arrangement, I recommend outsourcing to Pinterest or YouTube on some really helpful tips to make your bouquet look like a boutique hotel wedding arrangement! You’ll be shocked at what you’re capable of doing when you give yourself some time to have fun with it!
If you’re looking for something a bit more “evergreen” and don’t mind using faux flowers, these are some of my favorite recent finds.
2) Linens
Linens can be such a simple way to depth, texture, and a sense of effortless elegance to your table scape!
One option is to layer linens with a foundational tablecloth in a neutral or muted tone. Think soft ivory, oat, or pale blush to give the look the ultimate base. From there, you can introduce a runner in a contrasting texture or subtle pattern, such as linen with frayed edges or gingham for a spring-inspired feel. Then you can layer cloth napkins at each setting, fold them casually or tie them with ribbon or twine for a relaxed, yet thoughtful touch! If you’re using placemats, opt for woven or scalloped styles to add visual interest beneath each plate. Mixing tones within a similar palette (like creams, dusty blues, and warm taupes) creates a cohesive yet dimensional setting that feels both curated and welcoming.
You can adjust this as you feel necessary, but I feel that layering your linens with neutral tones allows you to have more fun with color (where your florals come into play!) And when you purchase neutral linens, you are able to keep them for a long time and not feel like you are exhausted with that gaudy orange you chose a while back that makes you wonder why you chose it in the first place. Neutrals, in this case, provide utmost versatility!
Alternatively, you can go with a patterned table cloth, and then layer neutral tones over it! This is one of my favorite patterned table clothes for spring!
3) Dinnerware
This is another element that may seem expensive, but it definitely doesn’t have to be! One of my favorite places to get glassware and dishware are antique stores. I absolutely love walking into an antique store and never knowing what I might find. I have found some of the most charming pieces of glassware and dishware in antique stores for hardly nothing. I also am of the mind, with certain events, it is fun to have mismatched glassware/dishware! It adds a personality and a story to each piece (and also allows your guest to know which cup is theirs). And listen, there’s nothing wrong with a solo cup. It’s cheap and easy. But it’s worse on the environment and not as, well, “cohesive” (so, I guess there are a few things wrong with them!)
If you’re looking for an alternative to antiques, these dishes are some of favorites, and we’ve had them for over 10 years!
4) Set the tone & create the ambiance
Think about what kind of vibe you want your party to have. Relaxed? Elegant? Casual? Cottage core chic? Backyard grill out? Coastal? Whatever it may be–think and plan what kind of vibe you want to go for and use that as your guidepost for your event.
You can really set the tone and create the ambiance by a playlist that sets the tone without you ever needing to do a thing! That’s what I love about music–it really can transport you to wherever you feel you want to go. So the right playlist can really make the biggest difference! (We love this speaker, if you need one for your space or next beach trip!)
Beyond music, think about lighting. String lights, lanterns, candles, or even colored LED bulbs can all dramatically change the feel of your space. Scents matter too! A few strategically placed candles or diffusers can add a subtle layer of atmosphere that ties everything together. All of these elements really add to the aesthetic and theme you are trying to achieve!
Hosting does not have to be a pain. You can reframe the way you think of hosting (if you don’t love it already) and make it a creative way for you to have fun with your home and your creative skills! I encourage you all to make everyday moments, no matter how big or small, feel special, curated, and intentional in every way you can. I assure you with these four tips, your event will be taken to the next level!
