Mother’s Day is almost here, which means so are gift guides with loads of products to get mom. While there’s no shortage of sentimental ideas out there for highlighting past memories, I love the thought of giving something that will one day evoke future memories you’re making in your home today. 

That may sound a bit ambitious, but the concept is really simple: give the gift of a scent. I’ve mentioned a few times before on here and assume it’s common knowledge at this point, but your sense of smell strongly linked to memory due to the connection and close proximity between your sniffer and the emotional center of your brain. (Scientific stuff, right?) With that being the case, I’ve long loved filling spaces in your home with certain smells that not only bring a sense of peace, joy, or calm in the moment, but that also pull you back to those times when you encounter the same scents down the road. 

Whether it be choosing a perfume for a certain trip or phase of life, or trying to give your living room a “signature scent,” intentionally selecting the smells you encounter each day can spark joy for your future self in the most unexpected ways.

With notes of grapefruit, jasmine, and coconut, this scent is perfect for keeping a space fresh without overpowering it!

Living Room (Lounge):

Night Gardenia by Anthropologie

Just off of our kitchen is a moody room we cheekily dubbed “The Lounge.” It’s a space for deep talks over a morning coffee or late night cocktail — and affectionately doubles as a playroom between shifts. 

Night Gardenia is a muskier, floral scent that has citrus notes that genuinely feels like it was made to accentuate the taste of a French 75. If there were ever a scent that felt like a signature scent of a hotel bar, it would be this one. 

Bedroom:

Sunday Morning by Brooklyn Candle Studio

Our room has become more and more of a safe space for us at the end of the day as we settle into our home. Once our son goes down and we clean the house, we retreat to our room as if it’s an escape from the world. Even if we have to get more work done in the evening, going to a cozy, warm, and inviting space feels only natural. 

That’s why I love this scent for our room — it evokes that same warmth and softness while floral notes and amber woods add a dreamy touch to everything. 

General Home Scent:

We stayed at the Lowell Hotel on the Upper East Side last year in what has to be our favorite New York hotel experience outside of the Plaza. One of the things that struck me staying there was the scent they chose for the lobby and rooms. It was fresh and made you feel like you were in a greenhouse without the humidity (in a great way). I fell in love, and when I asked them what scent they used, they told me it was Bamboo by Nest.
