We’re Remodeling Our Son’s Bathroom (Eeek!) | Three Things I Considered While Designing It

2/18/25

We’re embarking on our first major remodel project since we moved in last Summer, and it’s an incredibly fun one: our son’s bathroom! We recently re-decorated his bedroom, and the bathroom we use for him was in need of an update itself. Demolition officially started this week (I even got to take a few swings with the sledgehammer myself), so we figured it was as good of a time as any to share more about it.

I wanted to share the mood board I created to steer this design project, along with a few things I tried to keep in mind along the way.

  1. Statement Tile.

The tile design was the potentially the number one inspiration behind the rest of the choices we made. Tile that makes a big impact tends to be very expensive, so I wanted to find a creative solution to avoid breaking the bank on this particular part of the process.

I’ve noticed some people using subway tile in contrasting colors, laid in a stripe pattern, which gives you the same “statement” effect in a significantly more cost effective way. I went with green and white subway tile colors, and I can’t wait to see them installed!
  2. Versatility.

When I was designing this bathroom, I wanted to balance the idea of it being a kid’s space and a restroom for guests, too. We love hosting people and allowing them to stay with us when coming in from out of town, so it was important to find a way to keep this from feeling comfortable for our son while avoiding discomfort for our guests.

Ultimately, we want this room to feel fun yet functional and using a subtle pattern is a great way to make things light-hearted while remaining understated. After all, even if we didn’t have guests using this bathroom, toddlers do turn into middle schoolers and high schoolers one day!
  3. Durability and Efficiency.

Remodeling a non-primary bathroom is not something we wanted to break the bank on, but we obviously want it to be able to withstand the rigors that comes with being a room where children clean themselves. To achieve this, we tried to balance how we used our budget.

Tile is always a big expense no matter what, but opting for the more cost effective route (for a textile that is generally durable regardless) allowed us to shift our financial focus to the vanity while making sure our toilet and lighting were also quality choices. These are the true functional pieces of the bathroom that will be most prone to breaking down, so being able to invest slightly more in them is a smaller expense than higher end tile and ensures they’ll last longer.

If you’ve been reading our blog for awhile now, then you know we scour Wayfair often to find good deals, explore different brand and design options, and to find decor for our home. We’ve been able to get nearly everything we needed for our bathroom renovation through them, and that’s made the bringing this space together so much easier. With a design project like this, being able to search and sort through different options to find exactly what you need is hugely important, which is our favorite part of using Wayfair’s website. We’re linking everything we’ve used from Wayfair for our bathroom remodel below. Hopefully it helps if you’re considering your own project in the future!
