How to Make a Good First Impression in Your Home

You never get a second chance to make a great first impression — or so the saying goes. While styling a space certainly isn’t the same thing as prepping for a successful introduction, it can have a similar effect on you and guests who enter your home, which is why we wanted to highlight one of the underrated and often overlooked nooks in a house or apartment: the foyer.

The entryway can often become the home of junk drawers, shoe collections, and even outerwear you forgot was buried under other jackets on the coat rack. The term “foyer” itself originally referred to a space where actors would wait before going on stage in the theater — an 18th century, french “green room” of sorts. That being the case, it stands to reason that it might slip our minds as a place to make people feel welcome, and instead be treated as a utilitarian “back of house” area (even when it’s very much front and center).

To that we say: why not both?

We’ve always loved the idea of a small table taking “center stage” of the foyer. It’s equal parts welcoming and pragmatic, and can easily be decorated in a way that feels intentional without being high maintenance while retaining practical purposes. Beyond that, a table is, in and of itself, an inviting symbol of community, family, and togetherness, so bringing it into an entryway makes a ton of sense for immediately giving people a sense of familiarity and openness.

*We love using a small vignette like a table with a few curated pieces on it to make a corner feel elevated and well-considered!

We tried this when we originally styled the entrance of our apartment, but ended up needing more storage in that specific space. Now, it makes a lot of sense and gives us tons of options to play around with our “first impressions” — fresh flowers, candles, lamps, coffee table books, or even something cute like mints for guests could all be, well, on the table.

We’ve used Wayfair so much in the early days of styling our home, and this may sound silly, but being able to decorate small vignettes in a new space — while the “big picture” is still very much in flux — is a comforting part of the process and gives a sense that this truly is home now. We’ve had loads of luck with great finds, with everything from the table itself and the pieces we put on it being easy to find and affordable to purchase. We’re sharing 10 of our favorite pieces from Wayfair for styling your foyer below!

    Really nice article.
I also share this point of view. I like when People feel welcome, invited at first sight.

Hi there! In the process of buying our first home and looking at the simplest of spaces and creating a vision for each space.
What would you say is a make or break for creating a first impression that should be our focus?
For example: focusing on paint and floors first? Paint and decor? Paint and light fixtures?
Love your work and always looking for inspiration from you. 🙂

Great question, Lexie! Anna and I chatted about this and actually think it’s something that deserves it’s own post. We’ll get that together and get it posted this week! Thanks so much for the kind words and great question!
