A Summer Patio, Re-Composed

7/01/25

Summer arrived in full color this year, and the patio—our in-between room—felt ready for its own small awakening. We didn’t need a renovation, just a gentle shuffle of textures and tones to invite longer evenings outside.

The foundation

We began underfoot with a simple tan outdoor rug—loose-woven, sun-soft, the sort that disappears beneath bare feet yet frames the space with calm geometry.

A seat in summer stripes

Then came the pieces that set the mood: patio cushions in bold green and white broad-stripes. Something about them echoes the uniforms at Ralph’s Coffee—preppy, easy, quietly nostalgic. They’re kinder to little hands (and the occasional popsicle) than our old white cushions, and the green mirrors the foliage just beyond the screened in deck.

Drawers in the open air

We slipped a low set of outdoor drawers against the wall—an unexpected addition, but a revelation. Sunscreen, bug spray, bubble wands, stray sunglasses: all the tiny things that usually send us back inside now live right where we need them, hidden but handy.

A place to land a glass

Two small side tables finish the scene. Nothing ornate, just sturdy perches for iced tea, citronella, or a paperback—proof that surfaces are as important outdoors as in.

A timely nudge

If you’re considering your own refresh, Home Depot’s Fourth-of-July sale runs until July 9 this year, and most of these pieces are part of it. A good excuse, perhaps, to let your patio breathe a little differently for the season.

Because sometimes all a space needs is a new rhythm: a rug that quiets the floor, stripes that catch the eye, a drawer that keeps the day uncluttered. Small changes, big exhale—exactly what summer evenings are made for.
